Im musikalischen Kosmos des Berliner Hofes in der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts nahm Christoph Schaffrath eine bemerkenswerte Stellung ein. Als hochgeschätzter Tastenvirtuose wirkte er zunächst im Umfeld des Hofes von Friedrich dem Großen und war später über viele Jahre als Cembalist im Dienst von Prinzessin Anna Amalia tätig, der musikliebenden Schwester des Königs. Schaffraths Musik steht exemplarisch für die stilistische Übergangsphase der Mitte des 18. Jahrhunderts: Sie verbindet die strukturelle Klarheit und kontrapunktische Disziplin des Spätbarock mit der melodischen Eleganz und affektgeladenen Ausdruckskraft des empfindsamen Stils.

Christoph Schaffrath – a keyboard virtuoso associated with the court of Frederick the Great. He has now returned to the spotlight of the music world thanks to harpsichordist Anna Firlus and the {oh!} Orkiestra, conducted by Martyna Pastuszka.
Christoph Schaffrath occupied a remarkable position within the musical world of the Berlin court in the mid-18th century. A highly esteemed keyboard virtuoso, he initially worked in the circle of Frederick the Great’s court and later served for many years as a harpsichordist to Princess Anna Amalia, the king’s music-loving sister. Schaffrath’s music is exemplary of the stylistic transition of the mid-18th century: it combines the structural clarity and contrapuntal discipline of the late Baroque with the melodic elegance and emotionally charged expressiveness of the Empfindungsstil.
