Günter Raphael: Symphonie Nr. 1 (1926)

Ab Mai erhältlich: die Weltersteinspielung der 1. Symphonie von Günter Raphael. Dank an das ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien und an den Verlag Breitkopf & Härtel für das Material und Matthias Herrmann für die Werkeinführung. Vor fast 100 Jahren wurde die Symphonie vom Gewandhausorchester unter Wilhelm Furtwängler uraufgeführt (1926) und liegt nun erstmalig auf Tonträger vor.

Günter Raphael (1903-1960) wuchs in einer Zeit auf, die durch die Übergangsphase von der Spätromantik zur Klassischen Moderne geprägt wurde. Seine musikalische Ausbildung und frühe Schaffensperiode war noch ganz von der Tradition der Romantik beeinflusst. Die Melodik, Harmonik und die Ausdruckstiefe seiner Werke erinnern oft an das späte 19. Jahrhundert. In den 1920er Jahren, als sich die Moderne zunehmend durchsetzte, fand Raphael jedoch einen eigenen musikalischen Weg, der einerseits in der Tradition verankert war, andererseits aber auch die Entwicklungen der Zeit in die Werke integrierte.
Raphaels 1. Sinfonie entstand in den 20er Jahren und zeichnet sich durch ihre melodische Fülle und expressive Tiefe aus, die stark von der spätromantischen Tradition beeinflusst ist. Besonders bemerkenswert ist die meisterhafte Orchestrierung und der dramatische, geradezu ergreifende Charakter der Musik, der hier durch das ORF Radio-Symphonieorchester Wien unter Fabian Enders wunderbar zum Ausdruck kommt.

Günter Raphael (1903-1960) grew up in a period characterised by the transition from late Romanticism to Classical Modernism. His musical training and early creative period were still entirely influenced by the Romantic tradition. The melodicism, harmony and expressive depth of his works are often reminiscent of the late 19th century. In the 1920s, however, when modernism was increasingly gaining ground, Raphael found his own musical path, which on the one hand was anchored in tradition, but on the other also integrated the developments of the time into his works.

Raphael’s Symphony No. 1 was composed in the 1920s and is characterised by its melodic richness and expressive depth, which is strongly influenced by the late Romantic tradition. The masterful orchestration and the dramatic, almost poignant character of the music, which is wonderfully expressed here by the ORF Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under Fabian Enders, are particularly remarkable.
